You’ve probably seen the latest craze by now; Dalgona (or whipped) coffee. Who knew you could make such a thing with instant coffee? It looks very impressive, but how do you make it and what does it taste like? We gave it a try and here’s how it went…

What you need

Instant coffee
Sugar
Hot water
Milk of your choice

In terms of equipment, I cannot recommend an electric whisk enough for this. It took a while to whip up to the right consistency with a heavy-duty mixer, so I think you’d be there a long time if whisking by hand! If you don’t have a mixer, I think an Aerolatte Milk Frother would also work.

How to make it

It’s actually really easy to make and doesn’t take too long at all (unless you’re whisking by hand!).

  1. Add your instant coffee, sugar and water (2 tablespoons of each) to a bowl.
  2. Whisk, whisk, whisk! Keep going until your mixture turns shiny and aerated (about 4 mins on high). It should be the consistency of stiff whipped cream.
  3. Fill a glass with milk, hot or cold. We used semi-skimmed cows’ milk, but Oat, Almond, Coconut or Soya would also work well.
  4. Spoon the whipped coffee on top of your milk and serve.

The verdict

It looks good – very Insta-worthy! You could make yours look even more special by adding toppings like chocolate flakes or a toffee sauce, but we just kept it simple.

The whipped coffee on its own was quite bitter, despite the sugar. However, once it was stirred through the milk it was diluted a little and I quite enjoyed it. It definitely won’t replace my usual Flat White, but I would say it was a success!
